Character Name: Leonard Shelby
Canon: Memento
OU or AU?: OU
Canon point: Post-Movie
Setting: Literally set in the real world. There is nothing supernatural about it. The year is 2000.
History: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memento_(film)
Personality: Try to cover all important facets of your character's personality; at least three hundred words should suffice.
It's hard to put one word on Lenny's personality because he isn't 100% sure of it himself. When one can only remember who they used to be, it's not hard for his attitude to change very quickly, depending on the situation. If something upsets him, he can act out harshly, and without regret or conscience. Because he cannot make new memories, it's only a short matter of time before he forgets what he's done completely.
What Leonard was prior to his accident, which rings true even now and probably won't change anytime soon, was a devoted man. The only thing keeping him going - his only purpose in life - is to avenge his wife who, from his perspective, was raped and killed by an unknown home invader who Leonard spends the majority of the movie trying to find. Unbeknownst to him is not only is his wife dead, but he's already killed the murderer three times over. Upon realizing this, he comes to the realization that he's nothing without his self-made mission, leading him to start the cycle over again. In many ways, it's a coping mechanism.
He's disciplined himself in other ways as well. He's an extremely focused man who doesn't let himself get distracted too easily, if at all. One of his quirks is that he's always writing notes to himself and taking pictures, which helps him keep himself grounded and in control of his memories. He's constantly following clues that he's left for himself, and because of this he's learned only to trust himself. He also has a paranoid streak as well; he'll trust only his own handwriting and will remain stubborn should someone try to convince him that he's wrong.
At face value, Leonard maintains a mostly friendly personality and can be talkative if he's in the right mood. Unfortunately, his condition leaves him unable to remember most conversations after they occur. Generally his pictures and notes help with this. He doesn't typically get aggressive with other people until they do something to put him off or if his notes suggest that they cannot be trusted.
Despite his paranoia, Leonard's fatal flaw is that he's very easy to manipulate. Another person can do something horrible to him and, if he is unable to make a note to himself about it, he might find himself friendly with them later due to forgetting everything that happend. However, should his notes indicate that a person is actually out to do him harm, he will act accordingly and keep his distance. It makes relationships with him very difficult, and you may never know where you stand with him because he doesn't let others look at his notes. The tattoo on his arm reads "CONSIDER THE SOURCE" - symbolic words that remind him that every new piece of knowledge must be carefully thought over before any decision is made.
Because of the difficulty his condition causes him, Leonard never knows why he is happy, sad, or angry. He lives in the moment. There is no reason for him to dwell on these feelings for too long, as doing so would just become more frustrating. He plays it off well, and knows how to hide his weaknesses. This 'seize the day' attitude is important, because there is literally no other way for him to function. Every new moment when his memory resets causes him to have to start over with everything.
Luckily for him, Lenny recalls everything up to his head injury. He therefore recognizes the world around him and knows where he's come from. He mentions that these are the types of memories we take for granted. For example, he knows how a wooden table is going to feel before he touches it, what sound it will make if he knocks against it. The only thing he doesn't have when it comes to his past is any connections. For whatever reason, he has lost all relationships he might have once had... leaving him with no one to trust. Trust, therefore, is impossible, since it is based on one's history with another person, and Leonard cannot remember having met them before at all. This leaves Leonard making pragmatic decisions 'in the now'. There is no right and wrong or black and white; for him, it's all grey.
Abilities: He's just a normal guy. His only "ability" is the fact that he's conditioned himself to still function with his disability. He has a system. Because of how this system works, I am requesting that he arrives in Rapture with the following items:
His briefcase- includes in it his medical file and other notes to himself. Lenny will add to this as time goes on to help himself understand what has happened so far.
Polaroid camera & film- used to take pictures of important people and places so that he knows what he should recognize. He needs the instant photo system because he will not remember the significance of the pictures if he would need to wait on them to develop.
Pen & notepad- used to write himself notes. He will write notes on photos of the names of people and facts about them, or places he should recognize.

Network sample: An example post to the Rapture Hotline of at least 100 words.
Wake up in an anonymous motel room. There's nothing in the drawers. But you look anyway. Across the room you hear a voice, but upon closer inspection it's just coming from this device.
I'm certain I've never been here before. Certain because I would have left something for myself, given myself some clue. At least, I'm pretty sure I would have.
See, I have this condition--
[There's a loud noise in the distance. A few muffled sounds as the man drops the device to his side and walks away to inspect the sound. A few moments pass of since. The speakers click again as he realizes what he's holding and that it's on.]
Okay... what was I doing...
Hello? Who is this? Are you still there?
Log sample: An example prose post of at least 300 words.
In a way, it's like waking up. You just don't remember falling asleep. Sometimes, even normal folks didn't remember that, but Leonard was different. Normal people would find themselves in the halls of Rapture and immediately break down. Normal people would get hostile or nervous. Leonard didn't feel any of those things. He found himself in unfamiliar places all the time. Every ten or so minutes, he'd forget what he was doing and have to re-establish himself.
Just another day.
He glanced down at his hand, Remember Sammy Jankis. Like a match striking a light in a dark room, and Leonard began moving through the hallways. Everything around him was new and interesting. It always was, but Leonard never had time to stop and smell the roses. Life was too short for that, and he wouldn't remember anyway. He always had something else he needed to accomplish, an errand to run, something to take care of. Those things could never wait. Those things needed to be taken care of immediately before they were forgotten. Function over fun.
Fists dove into the pockets of his blazer, grasping at the photographs within. He paused to look at them, find a lead on where to go. Among the photographs, his home, a structure within Rapture where he kept his files. Notes and maps. Film and pictures. Clues to the puzzle that his life had become. He didn't know where it was, but he could follow a map. Conditioning at its finest. If only Sammy had been able to organize himself in such a way. To cope. But that was another man's tragedy. A tragedy that Leonard had learned from, consequences he wouldn't have happen to him.
This is why the system worked. The system would continue to work, not matter what life threw at him. No matter if he was in LA, or at the bottom of the ocean. Survival. That's what this was, and that's what it would continue to be.
